The Caledonian is in Murchison town centre - just one (1) minute walk
from Brecon House.
Wineries
The area is a major Victorian wine-making centre with many cellar
doors open for visits and tasting. Here are a few that you can sample
within easy driving distance from Brecon House.
Award
winning Murchison
Wines at picturesque Longleat Estate, is only 2 mins
drive down the road from Brecon House [or a 15 minute walk for the
energetic].
Established in 1975, Murchison Wines vineyard is planted on the west
bank of the Goulburn River. This beautiful winery is owned and operated
by Guido and Sandra Vazzoler.
Guido is a qualified winemaker - come and taste for yourself the quality
of his product. Sandra
is a cheesemaker - and so Longleat also boasts a casual café
which specialises in cheese platters and good coffee.
The cellar door is nestled amongst the vines, providing a tranquil
setting for wine and cheese tasting. Come and relax under the vine-covered
pergola - and enjoy!
Tahbilk
[15 mins] is one of the oldest wineries in Australia with Mitchelton
[20 mins] very close by.
Twelve
Acres [20 mins] is a small local winery specialising
in red wine and at Plunkett
Wines [25 mins] everything is grown, made and bottled
on the estate.
Other
Attractions
Nagambie with its lake, for water sports, and its weir [15
mins]; also the Waranga Basin [10 mins], which are part of the area's
irrigation system, provide boating and fishing.
Wetlands.
Masses of birds, fish, insects, frogs and a great variety of plants,
are found in the floodplain wetlands of the Murray-Darling basin.
These backwaters, billabongs, marshes swamps and lakes are places
of intense biological activity.
In Murchison there is the virtually untouched splendour of 'Doctor's
Swamp' and in Tatura there is 'Cussen Park', which is a reborn Wetland
that is now a remarkable, accessible, park with bird-watching hides.

Gold
mining - nearby Rushworth has a Heritage listed main street
and there is the Balaclava Gold Mine at neighbouring Whroo [15 mins].
Skydiving
at Kirwan's Bridge [10 mins].
Murchison
is a great place for a stopover to stock up on good cheap fruit. At
the heart of Australia's food bowl, the major fruit preservers and
food canners SPC-Ardmona [25 mins], Campbell Soups [35
mins] are located within easy reach in nearby Shepparton. They
both have factory outlets where you can bag a bargain!

[25 mins] is a major provincial city.
